We'll open the doors a little early and let folks in. Sometimes, we have surprises, sometimes, we play music, sometimes it's a little quiet. Get there a little early to be ready for kick-off!

Leverage Your Design Skills to Boost Confidence

A lack of confidence can make it difficult to make decisions, grow, and, ultimately, fulfill your potential. The ambiguity and complexity inherent to the design profession exacerbates the issue, challenging you to maintain confidence while constantly navigating new and unknown situations.

While power posing and affirmative self-talk can offer a momentary boost, lasting confidence is built through exercising curiosity. This approach allows anyone to utilize their design skills of exploration and experimentation to overcome the confidence gap.

Shaping Design: Actively shape your unique path in UX

Jason Mesut will share an overview of the visual frameworks he has been developing over the past 17 years. These frameworks help design teams, leaders and designers to reflect on their career and self, define their unique profile, and focus their future path. Helping you understand yourself better. So that you can sharpen your future focus.

Through his role as a team leader, and with workshops he runs with the community and his clients, he has seen how valuable it is for designers to self-reflect on who they are, and focus the areas in which they feel like they should develop. Whether that’s within, or beyond the context of the organisation in which they work.

He believes using these visual frameworks can help:
– Hire the right people and build the right teams for your organisation
– Reflect on your own abilities as designers, leaders and managers
– Direct your own and your team’s development
– Teams feel better about who they are within their organisation and recognise the opportunities of staying rather than leaving to grow themselves

UX Maturity Rankings – from diagnosis to increasing the impact of your efforts

Maturity models are tools to show you how you and your team are delivering as a UX practice. When you understand where you are and where you can go, planning for a successful future for you and your team can hone strategies for progress.

We’ll explore the details of many of the most popular maturity models to help you learn how to assess your team. Lastly, we’ll dive into sharing the results of your assessments to best articulate the value of leveling up

Catching UX Champions with Research Bait

Every UXer has a vague idea that having a UX champion well-positioned at your company is a good thing but no one tells you how to get one and what to do once you have one.

I’ll share my secrets on how you can identify potential UX champions by turning your research skills toward business stakeholders and then cultivate them into champions using your user research findings as bait.

Why you should create UX champions in your company
Why research is good bait
Steps to identifying a UX champion candidate
Steps to cultivating a UX champion
Congrats! You have a UX champion. Now what?

Presenting Your UX Work Using Spontaneous Talks Frameworks

We know that articulating our design decisions or presenting the value of our user research to stakeholders can sometimes be a challenge. Spontaneous Talks Frameworks have been around for years. They are often taught at universities and are used to help people think of answers or tell stories fast and smart. Jen is going to teach you a few Spontaneous Talks Frameworks so you can use them when presenting your work, answering tough questions or simply telling your stories. Applying these simple frameworks can help a person avoid anxiety by quickly organizing a thought, and moving forward to articulating that thought in a cohesive and eloquent manner.

Emergent Design Systems

In modern software development, design systems are a critical part of the design and development workflow across software organizations worldwide. To UX professionals early in their professional journeys, It can feel as though they’ve always been there, fully baked and operationalized, but in reality, they are the result of organic and emergent communities of practice within organizations that build digital products and has always existed in some form.

In this talk, I will share and contrast my personal experience developing a design system for a mid-sized agency and fortune 500 company alike to offer some insights into how that journey looked for me in order to demystify the process. It is my hope that the lessons I’ve learned will help some of you in your merry way to work with or govern design systems throughout your career.

To Be Rather Than to Seem: The Case for High-fidelity Prototypes in Experience Design

A great interactive experience should involve a lot more showing than telling. The end actor will need to know exactly how the product works with minimal explanation. Your demo should also require as little explanation as possible.

Static design tools (Photoshop, Sketch, Figma, etc…) do not present the reality of creating a digital product. They are also far less useful for creating interactions—macro or micro—and are especially cumbersome if you are designing for a variety of screen sizes.

To that end, I’ve started producing all client facing demos (prototypes) using core Web technologies (HTML, CSS, and JavaScript) to create interfaces that closely match the interactivity of final product. In this session, I will be explain the pros (and cons) of high fidelity prototypes, how to avoid the “prototype fidelity cliff”, how to make the transition, and what to expect from clients and team members who may be used to a completely different process. To clearly illustrate my points, I will be using case studies from projects I have been working on for the last decade.

Bringing Sight to Insights | How to Visualize Findings for Influence, Impact and Implementation

You’ve asked the questions, conducted the surveys, talked to the users, evaluated the competition and ran all the tests. You’ve done the research and have all the insights. Great, now what?

We’ll explore techniques and strategies to turn these insights into the right artifacts to drive the work forward and turn these valuable learnings and findings into powerful stories to influence partners and stakeholders, and ultimately impact the product through implementation of informed solutions.

3 key takeaways attendees will walk away with to help them improve in their roles
Research is not the end goal – how to take findings and create actionable artifacts
The power of story and visuals to drive alignment and impact
Insights are great when others can see them – unlocking learnings for partners and stakeholders
